"For Those Who Suffer From Guitar"
-Blake Mills
* a bundle of FIVE zines by Californian writer, musician and psychotherapist Matt Baldwin.
* Vol.1: This little book began as I started to jot down my thoughts about the strange and rhizomatic path I have been on since I started playing guitar 29 years ago. Eventually it became clear that I had intuitively developed something like my own philosophy around how to live and think as a guitar player. I wrote it as if I was speaking to myself about my own values and process and it should not be seen as a prescription for other guitar players, although hopefully some of the ideas will be useful. It is philosophy in the Classic sense, in that it is not overly theoretical but rather meant to practically inform how one lives. It’s a kind of catalog of how I think about creativity in general and is part of an intellectual lineage that includes The Stoics, De Sade, Nietzsche, Freud, William James, Camille Paglia and Nassim Taleb. Simply put, the message is: "We do not know who we are and we are much more than we will ever know."
* Vol.2: The voice kept whispering in my ear and I kept taking notes, so here it is: Volume 2 of HOW TO PLAY GUITAR - the next installment of my ongoing antimanual project for self taught, untimely guitar players. Covers the following topics: CONDUCT, SILENCE, PERFORMANCE, DRUGS, FRIENDSHIP & RELATIONSHIPS, SUCCESS, MERCH, ENERGETICS. Various useful heuristics for creative people who wander the night.
* Vol.3: Further explorations of my own artistic life as a kind antimanual for creative people who want to live happily in the unknown and teach things to themselves. Also includes a section on how to join a street gang.
* Vol. 4: Takes you deeper into my meditations on a life geared towards creative heat and generativity. Sections on GENRE, PSYCHODYNAMICS, ARCHETYPE, HEURISTICS, FINGERPICKING, SCENES, THE DEMO, IMPROVISATION VS COMPOSITION, SINGING, POLARITIES, DESCRIPTION and SCHEDULE. Long live self-directed punks, folkies, new agers and everyone else who dances at the graveside of oppressive guitar hierarchies."
* Vol. 5: Includes sections on TRASH TALK, STREET PERFORMANCE, DEEP STRUCTURES WITHIN MUSIC, POLITICS, HEURISTIC INSIGHTS, ALTERNATE TUNINGS, GIVING UP, PSYCHOTHERAPY, THE BODY, AMERICAN PRIMITIVE GUITAR, EFFECTS, several references to Martin Newell and a pissed off screed about education. The great flows of time are on our side and punk is an heirloom seed. Prove me wrong.
